COLD WEATHER SHELTER 2010 INFORMATION

Grace Community Church is hosting the Howard County Cold Weather Shelter in our facility the week of February 22nd - March 1st. This is a great opportunity for you, your Family, and/or your Small group to serve the homeless in our area. There are several ways you can serve. Keep reading to find a basic description of each job.

Cold Weather Shelter Job Descriptions and Opportunities

Facility Setup/Tear Down
  • Monday, February 22nd (morning), 2-3 people needed to set up bedding and arrange belongings in kidZone.
  • Sunday, February 28th (7:00 a.m.), 2-3 people needed to break down shelter and prepare for Sunday services.
  • Sunday, February 28th (12:45 p.m.), 2-3 people needed to set up bedding and arrange belongings in kidZone.
  • Monday, March 2nd (morning), 1-2 people needed to break down shelter and prepare for movers to transport belongings to next host church. In addition, volunteers will clean up area and ensure all items are moved or disposed of.
Evening Shift -
Nightly, 2-3 volunteers (at least 1 male/1 female) are needed between 5:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. to assist Grassroots staff with check in and seeing to the needs of the guests (i.e., explaining shelter rules, handing out bedding and personal items, directing guests to showers, collecting medications, and attending to any special needs).

Overnight Shift -
Nightly, 2-3 volunteers are needed between 10:15 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. to assist staff. To provide overnight supervision, provide wake-up calls for guests, set up breakfast, work with guests regarding returning the following night, and clean up. No social service experience is required.

Meal Volunteers - Groups and individuals can serve in this capacity. Individuals will be assigned to a team of other individuals not serving via a Grace group.
  • Evening Meals Volunteers – between 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Volunteers needed to provide evening meals for up to 25 shelter guests, evening volunteers, and staff. Duties may include meal preparation, dining area set up, serving, and clean up. Volunteers may eat with guests if desired. A menu will be established to avoid duplicate meals.
  • Bag Lunch Volunteers – As many volunteers as needed to provide bag lunches for shelter guests to take with them in the morning as they leave the shelter. Bag lunches can be prepared off site and dropped off at the shelter by 9:00 in the evening or by 6:00 in the morning.
  • Breakfast Meals Volunteers – Groups will prepare and drop off breakfast items either between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. the evening before they are responsible for breakfast (or at 6:00 a.m. the day of breakfast) for up to 25 guests. A menu will be established based on a first come, first serve basis.
Laundry -
   -- Daily: Volunteers are needed to pick up, wash, dry, and return a minimum of one load per person during the week of the shelter.
   -- March 1: Volunteers are needed to pick up, wash, and dry sheets and deliver to the next host church.

Volunteer Drivers -
  • Nightly – 5:30 p.m. drivers needed to provide transportation for shelter guests from Columbia Mall to Grace Community Church.
  • Mornings – Volunteers will transport guests to Columbia Mall from Grace at times designated below:
    • Monday thru Friday - 6:30 a.m.
    • Saturday - 8:00 a.m.
    • Sunday - After first service (10:45 a.m.)
